Temporary foreign workers in Canada are required to have a valid work permit. Work authorization is often granted through one of two main channels –TFWP and IMP.

Employers can apply for work permits through the TFWP if they receive a LMIA assessment. When an LMIA comes back affirmative, it means that there is a genuine labor shortage in Canada and that only foreign workers can fill the position. A positive LMIA is not necessary for IMP work permits. The employer is obligated to post a job opening on their portal.

EMPLOYER-SPECIFIC WORK PERMITS AND OPEN WORK PERMITS

A lot of people think about applying for a work permit as the first step when considering how to enter Canada. However, there is a lot of misunderstanding about the difference between an open work permit and a restricted work permit.

An open permit allows its holder to work for any employer in Canada for the period of the document, while a closed permit restricts the bearer to working only for the designated employer in the designated role. An open or closed work permit through Canada’s numerous programs may be possible for you to apply for depending on your level of education, experience, age, and language skills.

PERQUISITES TO BE FOLLOWED BY ALL APPLICANTS

When applying for a job seeker visa, you must meet certain criteria that vary by location. No matter where you apply or what sort of work permit you seek, you will need to satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires, that you will have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family during your time in Canada and to return home, that you will not pose a threat, that you will pass a medical examination, that you will not be working for an employer on the government’s list of those considered to be security risks, and that you will not be working for an employer listed.
